Medicare Supplement

older couple smilingMedicare supplement plans are also called Medigap insurance. Sold by private companies, Medigap coverage pays for health care costs that original Medicare (Plan A and B) doesn’t cover.  Medicare pays its share of the Medicare approved amount for services that are covered and then the Medigap policy pays its share. Put simply, a Medigap policy supplements your Plan A and B Medicare benefits.

Important things to know about Medigap policies

  • Medigap policies are to supplement A and B plans. You must have Plan A and/or B to get a Medigap policy.
  • There is a monthly premium for your policy. You may also have a premium for your Medicare Part B  that you pay to Medicare.
  • Each person needs their own Medigap policy
  • Your Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable, even if you have health issues. Your policy will not be cancelled as long as you pay the premium.
  • You cannot get a Medigap policy if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage health plan (also called Part C).

What Medigap/ Medicare Supplement Plans Cover

Generally a Medicare Supplement Plan will cover:

  • The deductible for your Part A Plan and your coinsurance, which is the 20% of the cost that Medicare does not cover.
  • Your part of the doctor’s bills for services covered under Part B
  • Your coinsurance for Hospice care
  • The first three pints of blood, annually

What Medigap/ Medicare Supplement Plans Don’t Cover

  • Long term care to help you with daily living: bathing, dressing, eating or using the bathroom
  • Vision care, eyeglasses, dental care or hearing aids
